Sault Ste. Marie Health and Sports Hall

Architecture [BS]

Description

This health and sports hall is in Sault Ste. Marie on the Ashmun Bay Park site, a peninsula that defines Ashmun Bay from Lake Superior and St Mary’s River. In the project I wanted to maximize views of the bay and the river as well as allow plenty of natural light into the building. With a focus on high performance and sustainability, energy generation in the form of a rooftop PV array is supported by a sawtooth roof profile. The roof panels are angled to optimize solar exposure which allows energy generation from direct light from the south and also creates apertures to allow diffuse light from the north to illuminate the interior. The materials also aim for sustainability, using locally sourced steel and mass timber. In addition to sustainability, the project is meant to be a sculptural piece that will become a landmark and an asset to the community. The overall form of the project uses rounded corners at the exterior walls in order to soften the structure’s appearance and to contrast with the angular roof profile which sits on top of the structure.
