Ashmun Arcade

DescriptionLocated in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the Ashmun Arcade introduces a formal connection between the peninsula and the activities located along the shoreline as well as the rest of the site. The program and circulation were heavily influenced by the curve of the shoreline. Visitors are guided along the arcade which serves as the main connection and access point to all of the spaces. Primary and secondary programs are identified through the use of materials where the primary activity spaces are constructed by large concrete double tees and the secondary spaces use mass timber. The east and west facing envelope systems are made of load bearing concrete panels that hide the heavy slope of the roof structure. The roofs of each structure redirect water runoff into a connected pool and rain garden system on the north side of the building. The Ashmun Arcade aims to create a community health and sports center for locals to enjoy the nature and existing outdoor activities of the site alongside the recreational activities introduced with the proposed project.
