Hello, my name is Jaron Richards, and I received my bachelors in Architectural Sciences from Western Kentucky University. I currently work at a firm in my hometown that focuses on commercial and educational work.
The Soo Health and Sports Hall
MajorArchitecture [M.Arch]
DescriptionLocated on the Ashmun Bay in Sault Ste Marie, the Soo health and sports hall utilizes the existing topography to fir under the building allowing for most of the exterior space to be used by the program space and community. The mass timber structure and interior wood tones create a smooth transition from the exterior to interior space. The metal panel siding and raw concrete accent the materials and blend them together to form a functional and aesthetic look. Most of all the interior program space has interior light from above the insulated glazing panels. The exterior space involves a courtyard and accessible walkway that meanders through the site’s wetlands and various forms of vegetation and rest areas that ends by the water’s edge with a viewing platform that overlooks the bay. A green house that grows food and is accessible to the community. The PV arrays cover the roof shape and angle that favors the sun path for maximum solar energy production. The main atrium space that extrudes from the rest of the building and roof monitors allow for natural light into the Gymnasium and pool spaces.
