Pediatric Cancer Center

Major

Interior Design [BS]

Description

The goal of the project is to rethink how a pediatric cancer center can embrace the patients being kids while providing the necessary treatments to children with cancer. With the inclined rate of kids being diagnosed with cancer, the urgency of redesigning these centers is more apparent. When these kids go for treatments, they are stuck inside these buildings for hours, days, even weeks at a time. Their mental and physical health are already negatively affected by their disease, their environments shouldn’t negatively contribute to it. The importance of the ages of this vulnerable population was a driving factor of this project because regardless of the treatment that is needed, it is important to embrace the idea that they are still kids and want to play and have fun. Through research, it was found that these kids are going through all different energy, pain, and social levels, and each child needs to be accommodated for. The thesis statement that captures this project is as follows, Experiencing childhood normalcy while providing home-like sanitary environments and youthful communal safe spaces is shown to increase levels of healing and shorten recovery time of pediatric cancer patients. The concept statement for this center that was driven by the thesis is as follows, creating a magical and whimsical experience while using soft yet playful colors, and designing around a small human scale that provides quiet individual spaces coexisting with lively community spaces creates playful environments that are flexible to each child's circumstances.
