The Soo Recreation Center
MajorArchitecture [BS]
DescriptionThe Soo Recreation Center, of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, strives to encompass the Sault Chippewa tribe values of continuation of life through protection and responsibility with the natural resources of land and water. To this end, the Soo Rec. Center takes on a compact spatial arrangement that responds to the natural landscape it is sited on to minimize disruption to the wetlands and wooded areas of Ashmun Bay. Constructed of mass timber, with several LEED Net Zero characteristics such as high solar energy generation and an integrated solar hot water system, this building serves as an active hub for recreation in Sault Ste. Marie. Not only does the site allow for many LEED credits to be fulfilled, meeting high standards allows for the building to ensure multiple uses for years to come. The primary intent of encouraging movement is met through its integration with hiking, snowmobiling, biking and fishing networks, as well as through its natatorium, daylit gymnasium and competition-grade indoor track. The Soo Recreation Center seeks to promote health for the community and longevity for years to come— inside and out!
