Dane Peterson, a senior in Architecture, is planning on graduating this spring with his Bachelor’s and continuing into the Master’s program at LTU CoAD. He gets excited about utilizing new technologies in his work and learning new fabrication techniques. Creating responsible and beautiful designs is something that he finds deeply rewarding.
Sault Ste. Marie Sport Hall

DescriptionThe Soo Sports Center is located on the Ashmun Bay peninsula in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. The site was chosen for its existing rich natural habitats and seasonal activities like boating and ice fishing. One of the main goals of the project is to enhance these experiences and not let the program diminish the local culture and habitats of the site. Following the robust design criteria of the Living Building Challenge, all the materials and labor during construction are either locally sourced or found within a 500-mile radius. The massive solar array on the roof of the building, a combination of both solar panels and evacuated tube solar heat collectors, generates a surplus of electrical energy and greatly reduces the heating loads.
The design of the building utilizes a mass timber structural system to tie into the site’s dense trees. The two main spaces, a pool and ice rink, take advantage of a hybrid portal frame/truss system that mimics the surrounding trees, lifting up the roof canopy to flood the space with natural light. The combination of site, energy efficiency and generation, and natural design that reflects the surroundings leads to the Soo Sports Center’s integrated experiences.
