Sports and Recreation Center
MajorArchitecture [BS]
DescriptionThis project is a 96,000 square foot sports and recreation center in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. The structure is made of mass timber CLT and glulam beams. It includes two full basketball courts, three pools of varied sizes, a climbing wall, cafe, cycling room, dance studio, yoga studio and classrooms. Throughout its design, passive daylighting and cooling systems became prominent, as well as Universal Design practices, seen in the universal gender bathrooms and main ramp connecting two floors and track circuit mezzanine. This building also meets LEED standards for a platinum certified building, generating 94% of yearly energy required. The goal of this project is to create a building that improves the health of its occupants and community, while affecting the environment as little as possible.
