My name is Rumi Kankariya. Currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Architecture at LTU, I eagerly anticipate graduating in Spring 2024. I began my architectural journey by earning my Bachelor's degree in Architecture from India. During my two years of professional experience in India, I've had the opportunity to contribute to various residential projects through designing, developing and delivering architectural and interior drawings and models. As I continue to grow and evolve in my career, my goal remains the same: to create meaningful spaces that enrich the lives of those who inhabit them.

Description

The Soo Health and Sport Hall project, located at the Ashmun Bay site, aims to create a dynamic and inclusive community space in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. With the response to natural daylight and renewable energy sources, the building prioritizes ecological sustainability. The hall features a clear organizational system, facilitating meaningful connections between people and place. With two floors dedicated to promoting health and recreation and a focus on universal accessibility, the hall offers a wide array of recreational amenities for all community members.

The ground floor showcases a swimming pool facility, catering to aquatic exercise and leisure swimming. Adjacent spaces are designated for curling sports, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy this traditional winter activity year-round. At the core of the ground floor is a climbing wall providing diverse opportunities for physical activity. Additionally, a cafe offers a space for socialization and relaxation, while locker rooms ensure convenience and comfort for visitors.

On the second floor, additional activity spaces, including a fitness and weights area, studios for dance, yoga and racquet sports and a court area for indoor sports and games, further enrich the facility's offerings, complemented by the inclusion of a track circuit that overlooks the pool and curling sport areas.

The hall features a main structural element of mass timber, incorporating glulam columns and beams, showcasing a commitment to environmentally friendly construction practices. The curved roof design not only adds aesthetic appeal but also allows for the introduction of northlight within the building, enhancing the use of natural light. Besides, Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) and Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS) are installed for efficient heating, cooling, and ventilation. Notably, the facility harnesses the power of the sun through a photovoltaic (PV) array, ensuring sustainable energy generation to power its operations.

The hall also features ample parking and utilizes the existing boat launch area, further integrating with the surrounding environment and enhancing accessibility. The scenic waterfront location and diverse recreational opportunities at the Ashmun Bay site create a vibrant hub for health and leisure activities, fostering community well-being and engagement.
