DESCRIPTION

Shaheen’s work explores ideas of labor and value, specifically whose labor is chosen to be valued and whose labor is dismissed. One of the main ways this distinction has been made historically is through distinctions of material. To highlight this conflict, she combines materials that have been deemed less valuable or low brow and intersects them with material labeled the opposite: neon with ceramic, decorative architectural elements with non-structural materials, etc. This work calls into critique the history of so many design disciplines as well as calling out current problematic issues in art and architecture.
