Description

This project explores ways to create a healthy building and a healthy space to improve the lives of people. The Living Building Challenge helped to guide the design process with an emphasis on the Energy, Material, Health and Happiness, and Place petals. The building program is a sports and wellness facility that provides spaces for exercise, meditation, learning, and community gathering. The building's energy needs are powered completely by a large solar array integrated into the building roof and site program. The structure and materials of the building are mostly sourced regionally and have qualities of low embodied carbon. The interior of the building includes access to daylight, views of the site, and a fresh air ventilation system to provide fresh interiors connected to nature. This takes advantage of the beautiful site located in Sault Ste. Marie along the St. Mary’s River.
