Allison Clark is a senior architecture student at Lawrence Tech and will be continuing her education through LTU’s MArch program in the summer. Throughout their time at LTU, Allison has focused on the circular economy in which we as designers operate as well as the identity and value placed on materials and construction methods. Allison believes that all architecture and design should reflect the traditional practices of the project location all while providing a missing or lacking need of the community.
The Ashmun Bay Park and Recreation Center
MajorArchitecture [BS]
DescriptionThe Ashmun Bay Park and Recreation Center is a proposed project to be located within Ashmun Bay Park in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. As this project will be implemented on a site with many natural features, the building is designed to peek out from the natural landscape. To better integrate the building into the site, the Northeastern portion of the first floor is embedded into the pre-existing hill. Similarly, to minimize the impact of the Southern portion of the building, the roof is sloped to grade with the lower portions including vegetation to help the blend of the structure. The building is composed of locally sourced materials and is designed to minimize construction waste during the construction phase. With a majority of the interior and exterior materials being composed of timber products, there are certain elements, such as the sawdust based insulation, that can be created using offcuts or construction waste. This building is working towards achieving LBC status and therefore includes community based programming such as a dedicated community garden on the Western end and developed hiking trails within the Eastern portion of the site.
