The Soo Wellness Center
MajorArchitecture [M.Arch]
DescriptionThe Soo Wellness Center is not only intended for physical wellness but to support the community at large through providing spaces that promote engagement, activism and connection to the natural resources the Soo provides. Early on in the project the intent was to integrate the building within the site and elevate the existing uses of the park and its resources.
To maximize efficiency and limit waste modular assemblies were looked upon to provide multi-functional building components that can serve and function harmoniously to meet the building needs and exceed LEED Platinum Standards. Precast concrete offers the opportunity to provide structure, envelope, integrated HVAC which directly influenced the form. The building form was then manipulated to promote healthy environments, incorporation of day lighting, and gathering spaces which were derived from site influences. The precast concrete and interior wood panels have textural inlays influenced by the culture and history of the Soo to ground the center within the community to which it serves.
