Returning borrowers who did not previously borrow from the Federal Direct Loan Program will also need to complete Entrance Counseling and sign a new Master Promissory Note with the Federal Direct Loan Program.

ยป Master Promissory Note (MPN)

The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s).

MPNs for students are good for 10 years if attending the same institution.

ยป Entrance Counseling

  • All federal student loan borrowers are required to complete entrance counseling prior to disbursement of a federal loan.
  • This should take approximately 15-20 minutes.
  • An electronic response will be forwarded to Enrollment Services.

By canceling the disbursement, you will be responsible for any unpaid tuition and fees, as well as repayment of loan funds already paid to you.

ยป Terms Parents and Students Should Know

  • Student Aid Index (SAI): The amount that the federal government estimates you are able to afford to contribute to educational expenses based on your FAFSA information. What you actually pay toward educational expenses may be more or less than this amount.
  • Institutional Aid: The Scholarships, grants and other financial aid programs provided by LTU. LTU allows (2) scholarships per our scholarship policy
  • Verification: The process of making sure the information submitted on the FAFSA is correct. The federal government requires colleges to have certain studentsโ€™ FAFSA information verified.

ยป Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans

Depending on your financial need, you may borrow subsidized money for an amount up to the annual loan-borrowing limit. Students must demonstrate financial need to apply for a subsidized loan. If you are eligible for a subsidized loan, the government will pay the interest while you are in school, for the first six months after you leave school, and when you qualify to have your payments deferred. Unlike a subsidized loan, the student is responsible for the interest from the time the unsubsidized loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. You can choose to pay the interest or allow it to accumulate and be added to the principal amount of your loan.
