In this lecture, Dr. Schatzberg defends technology against its critics from the humanities. These critics viewtechnology as un creative and devoid of moral values, a mere means serving hid den ends, and even a threat to humanity itself. With just a few exceptions, most humanist critics of technology know little about the subject. Yet technology desperately needs informed criticism. The best critiques, both in the present and the past, come from reflective practitioners, technical experts with humanistic sensibilities. Universities can nurture these sensibilities by integrating humanistic perspectives into technical education, especially the education of engineers and scientists.
