Dr. Steven K. Howell
Associate Provost and Dean of Graduate Programs
Dr. Howell has been at Lawrence Tech since 2001 as the Department Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department. He was appointed Interim Associate Provost and Interim Dean of Graduate Programs in July, 2007, and became Associate Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies in July 2008. Dr. Howell has been part of many initiatives involving faculty from the four colleges. Among other duties as the Interim Associate Provost, Dr. Howell facilitates LTU’s assessment process, the orientation of new faculty, and represents the Provost’s office in coordinating research and sponsored projects. As the Interim Dean of Graduate Programs, Dr. Howell works with the faculty and the deans of the colleges to oversee the overall quality and assessment of our graduate programs. Prior to joining LTU in 2001, Dr. Howell managed a Knowledge Based Engineering project for Visteon Automotive Systems and taught Computer Aided Design and Engineering classes for the C3P program at Ford Motor Company. He holds a U.S. Patent for a method to optimize the design of automotive HVAC air handling systems. He has authored textbooks in Computer Aided Design and Introduction to Engineering Design. Dr. Howell has a combined total of twenty four year's experience as an engineering faculty member at Lawrence Technological University, Northern Arizona University, University of Pacific, and University of Zimbabwe. While at Northern Arizona University, Dr. Howell helped develop and implement an award winning interdisciplinary series of design courses simulating a corporate engineering design environment. While at Lawrence Tech, Dr. Howell’s efforts have focused on establishing new programs including the Global Engineering program designed to provide engineering students with an international perspective and experience, alternative energy, aeronautical engineering, and biomedical engineering. He has also been instrumental in establishing an Entrepreneurial Engineering program at Lawrence Tech - introducing engineering students to business and management skills.
