What is the Leadership Capstone?
LDR 4000: Leadership Capstone is a course you take during your senior year. In this course you will practice critical writing skills through analysis and reflection, develop portfolio writing and preparation skills during workshops, and complete a leadership portfolio that presents a culmination of leadership education.
What is the Leadership Portfolio?
The portfolio is a collection of your academic work and experiences that presents you as a well-rounded, thoughtful leader.
Why do I need to be a senior to take this course?
The content of the portfolio is a culmination of your undergraduate education. Senior-level students will be more likely to have met the requirements and have gathered documentation for the portfolio than lower-level students. In addition, the College of Engineering requires students include components of their senior capstone project.
What are the portfolio content requirements?
The content requirements for all portfolios include:
* Portfolio Introduction: The reflective introduction is a full essay that provides an overview of your personal leadership development and highlights your senior year experience. This introduction will be an analysis of your academic and leadership work in connection to your personal leadership journey, is reflective in tone, and summarizes the different elements of the portfolio.
* Coursework from COM 1001: Introduction to Leadership, Research, & Ethics (e.g., service-learning project)
* Coursework from LDR 2001: Leadership Models and Practices (e.g., case study, legacy project, interview with a leader)
* Course work from LDR 3000: Leadership Seminar Series (e.g., reflection essay)
In addition, each college (College of Engineering, College of Architecture and Design, College of Arts & Sciences, and College of Management) each have specific requirements for the content of the portfolio.
College of Engineering
* Examples from senior capstone project in Engineering (e.g., proposal, presentation)
* Letter from senior project advisor discussing your leadership on the project
* At least four student-selected examples of Engineering coursework that somehow demonstrate leadership
* At least four student-selected types of leadership experience outside of the classroom
College of Architecture and Design
An example of leadership development or experiences (in or out of the classroom) in each of the following areas:
* Global experiences, travel, or research in a global arena
* Service-learning/volunteer work with organizations or outside groups
* Urban experiences or those involving an urban context
* Teamwork experiences to achieve a common goal
Additional coursework from within the major in which leadership is demonstrated can also be included.
College of Arts & Sciences and College of Management
* Documentation that the student has explored at least one career option in depth
* Examples of at least two of the four following leadership experiences (in or out of the classroom):
- Lead, assembled or participated in an interdisciplinary team
- Cross-cultural experience
- Developed a new idea to solve a social or entrepreneurial problem
- Developed interpersonal skills (e.g., conflict resolution, networking, motivated/promoted others, effectively delegated tasks, negotiated a desirable outcome).
* Additional coursework from within the major in which leadership is demonstrated can also be included.
The portfolio requirements and assessment are based, in part, by your academic major. Make sure you follow the requirements specified by your college.
Are the requirements different for transfer students?
Transfer students who did not have to take Introduction to Leadership, Research, & Ethics do not have to meet the Introduction to Leadership, Research, & Ethics content requirement.
The other content requirements can include academic work/experiences that you completed at a different University. In other words, if you met the content requirements while a college student, you can include those pieces in the Portfolio.
How are portfolios evaluated?
Portfolios are deemed "Passing" or "Not Passing" according to the Leadership Portfolio Scoring Rubric. Portfolios will be evaluated by two instructors who have taught the course or are experienced in teaching within the leadership curriculum.
What is the best way to prepare for the Leadership Capstone?
Save electronic files of everything you do while you are a college student. In addition, use the guidelines for your major to complete the requirements before you get to the capstone course. It will help you prepare a successful and complete portfolio.
