Transfer Requirements
If you are transferring to another school, remember to submit all required materials to the school of your choice and receive notice that you have been admitted. You may apply to several schools but we may transfer your I-20 form to only one school. We recommend that you start the transfer process at least one semester before your intended transfer.
Inform your International Student Affairs Coordinator at LTU that you have been admitted and plan to transfer. Provide the name of your new school after you have been formally admitted; your Coordinator at LTU will electronically transfer your I-20 form to the new school. If you change your mind before your I-20 is transferred, we may cancel the transfer. However, once it has been sent electronically, we cannot retrieve it. You must then contact the new school because once it is transferred, we cannot access it.
You must complete the transfer requirements with the new school within sixty (60) days after completing the last day of the academic term upon graduation or 60 days after completing OPT. In order to maintain your F1 status, you are required to begin your new studies within five (5) months of completing your program, completing OPT or within five (5) months of the program completion date, on line 5 of your I-20, whichever date is earlier. If a school authorizes an earlier transfer after authorizing OPT, you must begin your new program within 5 months of that date.
If these procedures are not completed within the specified deadlines, of if you drop your classes without authorization, you may be considered to be out of status. Transfers may not be completed if you are out of status. If necessary, your International Student Affairs Coordinator may assist you with an application to reinstate your status through the local Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS).
