Exclusively for Incoming High School Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors

Don’t lose ground this summer!

 

Gain new knowledge, skills, and valuable experiences at Lawrence Technological University.

 

LTU offers stimulating academic camps for students interested in engineering, technology, design, and science. Professors will introduce you to the latest innovations in modern labs and studios on Lawrence Tech’s 102-acre campus in Southfield. Current Lawrence Tech students will be on hand to assist campers.

Choose a day or residential camp option. You can commute or opt for a residential camp. You’ll live in student housing, eat in the cafeteria, and participate in a fun selection of organized activities each evening.

Get a discount. You can save $100 by attending two, and $200 by attending three design camps (designated with an asterisk*). Come to a Blue and White Day, scheduled throughout the year on Lawrence Tech’s campus, and save another $50 per camp. Read more about Blue and White Days

Win a scholarship. The top students in each camp will be eligible for scholarships to Lawrence Tech.

Register by June 1, 2013. Early registration is recommended as the camps fill quickly.

JUNE 24–28, 2013

Forensic Summer Science Institute

9 a.m.–4 p.m., $400 day camp/$550 residential

For sophomores and juniors. Cost includes a $200 nonrefundable registration fee. If you are a highly motivated student proficient in biology, chemistry, and physics, the Forensic Summer Science Institute is the camp for you. You will be given a crime scenario, which you’ll solve using state-of-the-art lab equipment to explore DNA fingerprinting, drug testing, hair and fiber analysis, ballistics, gunshot-residue testing, and blood spatter analysis. This camp requires a separate registration process.

Leadership Institute

9 a.m.–4 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Get ready to take on the world! Fun, adventure, and becoming a better leader all go hand-in-hand in this exciting and challenging experience that will enhance your leadership skills. The LTU Summer Leadership Institute develops your leadership potential through an adventure course, technology-based activities, engaging and active workshops from business and government leaders, and more.

Portfolio Development Camp 1*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Looking to develop your creative portfolio? Perfect for both entry and refresher levels, this camp is led by two dedicated faculty members who will help you expand your knowledge of art and design through hands-on making. Special daily guests will expose you to a variety of creative disciplines, including game art, street art, fashion design, photography, performance art, and printmaking. You’ll learn the importance of documenting your work, as well as develop your skills through the creative process. At the end of camp, you’ll display your work in a gallery show and leave with a portfolio ready for your college application process.

Psychology

 9 a.m.–4 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Want to explore the human mind, see how the brain works, and learn about the secrets of our behavior? In this camp you’ll conduct experiments in human perception, memory, consciousness, language, and social behavior using current research techniques and high-tech devices. You’ll learn about behavioral conditioning by training real animals to perform specific actions in controlled experimental situations. You’ll also be introduced to the main techniques for treating psychological problems and participate in a simulated psychotherapy session. And to top it all off, you’ll dissect an animal’s brain to explore first-hand the complexity of this organ.

Sketching for Architecture and Design*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Designed to prepare you for beginning architecture and design courses, including industrial and transportation design, this camp focuses on developing your drawing skills in charcoal, graphite, roller ball, and marker. You’ll observe and draw the objects around you, our built environment, and images from photographs. Things are much easier to understand once you learn to draw them!  You’ll also visit the Detroit Institute of Art for an in-depth sketching session. This camp offers you a great opportunity to create or expand your portfolio.

Web Design*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Do you want to build your own website? Ever wonder what’s going on behind your Internet browser? Learn how to create HTML webpages with customized graphics and dynamic animations in Adobe Dreamweaver. You’ll design animated menus, rollovers, image galleries, and much more. Prior experience with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is preferred.

JULY 8–12, 2013

Basic Design*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Explore the exciting world of design in architecture, the graphic arts, transportation, interior architecture, and product development. You’ll be exposed to what makes good design and how designs visually relate to one another. Learn why some designs are more desirable than others. Understanding the fundamentals can help prepare you for a more serious study of design and the built environment.

Biomedical Engineering

9 a.m.–4 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Explore the role of a biomedical engineer in designing procedures and equipment that assist in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease and injury, make medical testing less intrusive, and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities. Team projects will acquaint you with basic engineering design tools and the instrumentation used in medical settings.

Building Big

9 a.m.–4 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Do you want to design and construct sustainable buildings? Bridges and highways? Do you want a cleaner environment? Civil engineers do it all. Find out how these experts help solve the world’s problems like supplying people with clean water and building safe structures and roads. With the help of current students and faculty, you’ll work on teams to build structures, conduct experiments, compete in creative challenges, and learn about the cutting-edge work being done in the field today.

Architectural Engineering*

9 a.m.–4 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Looking to go green? Want to help reduce the use of energy and preserve our natural resources? Join us and take your artistic skills, creativity, imagination, and interest in architecture, engineering, technology, and cutting-edge building sciences to the next level by helping to create a more sustainable world. Architectural engineers design high-performing buildings that are durable, safe, healthy, economical, and healing for the earth. Hands-on projects, group activities, field trips to an actual green building site and an architectural engineering office are just a few of the fun and challenging activities planned for you! A final project will cap off this exciting week of learning, collaboration, and fun.

JULY 15–19, 2013

Architecture and Interior Design, Week 1*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Have a great idea and some sketches? In this camp, you’ll develop your ideas into realistic designs of buildings and interior spaces. You’ll create plans and illustrations, along with a carefully crafted scale model. You’ll organize interior spaces; coordinate materials, colors, and textures; and choose lighting. And during this process, you’ll explore how your plan for the interior spaces can harmonize with the exterior architecture and still maintain a balance with nature. Attendance of this camp is required in order to participate in Architecture and Interior Design Camp, Week 2, July 22–26, 2013.

Automotive Engineering

9 a.m.–4 p.m., $650 day camp/$765 residential

Where better to learn about automotive engineering than at Lawrence Technological University, whose alumni lead the design teams of the GTO, the DeLorean, the Taurus, and countless other vehicles? This camp will expose you to the fundamentals of engine design and vehicle performance. You will visit and participate in the activities of the University’s laboratory facilities, and visit some of the automotive industry labs that are involved in the design and manufacturing of modern-day vehicles.

Creativity and Ingenuity in America

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

The best engineers solve problems creatively by looking beyond the obvious to see fresh, innovative solutions. Offered in conjunction with The Henry Ford, Metro Detroit’s acclaimed automotive history museum, you’ll participate in games, puzzlers, and activities that will nurture and strengthen your creativity. Focused field trips at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village will highlight key features of innovation from America’s past and you’ll discover how ingenuity is an important part of the products we use every day. The week will culminate in a team design project that will combine creative problem solving with the various skills you practiced during the week.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Expand your knowledge of microprocessors, build robots and circuits, and work in teams to solve electrical and computer engineering challenges. You’ll learn more about C, one of the most popular programming languages of all time, and the one that is used in most computers.

Game Art, Week 1*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $650 day camp/$765 residential

In this camp, you’ll focus on the dynamic world of video game development. You’ll learn the concepts of game design and the basics of 3D graphics production, including modeling, texturing, and animating. You’ll be required to play games and will create your own mini game portfolio. It is highly recommended that you attend this camp before participating in Game Art, Week 2, July 22–26, 2013.

Industrial Design, Week 1*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Industrial designers create the manufactured products we use every day: furniture, appliances, bikes, cars, tools, farm equipment, medical instruments, electronics, and much more. This camp highlights how art and design are combined with modern industrial processes to create consumer items that are marketed and sold. You’ll work on 2D projects that give you hands-on experience and include fun competitions. Attendance of this camp is required in order to participate in Industrial Design Camp, Week 2, July 22–26, 2013.

Robotics and Music

9 a.m.–4 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Music, math, computer science, and robotics are all related and you will explore each one of them by creating robotic musical instruments and composing music. You’ll get an introduction to music theory, sound recording, and editing with Audacity, and object-oriented Java programming. Lego NXT robotics with NXT-G and LeJos Java will be introduced to play and create music with sensors and motors. You will learn then how to connect the Lego NXT robotic musical instruments to a PC (and possibly) a mobile phone through Bluetooth and USB communication. To improve/add NXT-PC side capabilities, Java MIDI programming will be introduced. On the last day of camp, you will introduce your creative musical instruments and perform music. No robotics or music experience is required. Some knowledge of programming language is helpful, but not required.

Transportation Design, Week 1*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Do you have a talent for drawing and a passion for styling cars? In this camp, you’ll learn about the design and development of concept cars, create ideation sketches, and experiment with scale modeling. You’ll also see professional demonstrations and receive individual evaluations of your work. It is highly recommended that you attend this camp before participating in Transportation Design Camp, Week 2, July 22–26, 2013.

JULY 2226, 2013

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Biotechnology

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $650 day camp/$765 residential

In a research lab setting, you’ll genetically engineer bacteria, purify and quantify proteins, and learn how to clone genes. You’ll apply modern DNA profiling techniques to solve crimes and use high-tech tools to diagnose diseases and track infectious outbreaks. Your days will be filled with hands-on experimentation with just enough theory and background to make the experience meaningful.

Imaging and Graphic Design*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

Develop your artistic skills as a graphic designer. With the guidance of field-seasoned professionals, you’ll learn to navigate the challenges of visual communication while creating artwork for computer games, cartoons, and advertising. Sketching, photography, computer-based graphics, and animation will be featured.

Industrial Design, Week 2*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

In the second week of the Industrial Design Camp, you’ll refine and improve on the design prototype you created in your first week. You’ll also prepare a final presentation of your design, just like the professionals in the field do. Participation in Industrial Design Camp, Week 1, is required to attend this camp.

Motorsports

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $650 day camp/$765 residential

Do you love the rush and excitement of car racing? Learn what it is like to design racing vehicles that are fast, maneuverable, and able to withstand punishing terrain. In this camp you will examine the designs of the LTU Motorsports mini Baja and Formula SAE competition vehicles and make presentations on how you’d improve them.

Game Art, Week 2*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $650 day camp/$765 residential

Working with fellow campers to build on the skills learned in Game Art, Week 1, you will develop a polished game/level, just like in the real world. You’ll assume the roles of designer, programmer, and artist and find out where your talents lie. Participation in Game Art, Week 1, is not required to attend this camp, but it is highly recommended.

Thermal Science and Energy

10 a.m.–3 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

For juniors and seniors. Explore the basics of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer in this hands-on, science-rich camp. We live with the phenomena of thermal science every day, but most of us have no idea how they influence everything around us, including leading-edge technologies like alternative energy, biomedical engineering, and micro/nanotechnology. You’ll work in teams to learn how heat passes through materials; why some materials conduct heat more readily than others; and how energy is transported in different situations.

Transportation Design, Week 2*

9 a.m.–5 p.m., $600 day camp/$765 residential

In the second week of the Transportation Design Camp, you’ll work with clay to create a physical model of the vehicle you designed in the first week of camp. During the process, you’ll become familiar with the tools and techniques used by professional designers. Participation in the Transportation Design Camp, Week 1, is not required to attend this camp, but it is highly recommended.
