Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Architecture
This 12 credit hour certificate focuses on current issues in sustainable architecture. Up to 6 credits can be double counted with the core Master’s degree. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of critical design skills and readiness to assume positions in environmentally-focused leadership of design practices in our community and nationally. The ethics of architectural practice is at the forefront of our attitude toward the profession as we recognize the motto of Lawrence Technological University, "Theory and Practice."
There are two mandatory courses for the certificate. Environmental Issues offers an introduction to contemporary discussion regarding the impact of architecture and design on the natural environment. Construction Management outlines models of project (building) delivery, and discusses the manner in which issues of sustainability can be introduced into the construction process. These are both required courses in the Master of Architecture degree in Sustainability.
Students in the certificate program complete their requirements by taking classes from a pre-approved list of electives. Electives offered within the College of Architecture and Design cover a broad range of sustainability topics, from building technology, systems and performance, to social, ethical, and political issues surrounding the contemporary practice of architecture.
Students may also select courses from a pre-approved list of courses offered by other LTU academic units, such as engineering, managements, and the humanities. It should be noted that participation in some of these course may require satisfaction of prerequisites, or demonstration of particular technical abilities prior to enrollment.
