Lawrence Tech unveils bold three-part plan to help displaced workers
Lawrence Technological University is offering grants for an unprecedented 50 percent of tuition to 400 displaced workers to help them take advantage of new academic programs developed to help strengthen and diversify Michigan’s economy. The university is also opening up career networking opportunities to other displaced workers with college degrees.
At a press conference on Wednesday, President Lewis N. Walker unveiled “The Recovery Starts Here: LawrenceTechnologicalUniversity’s Stimulus Package for Displaced Workers,” a comprehensive, three-pronged initiative to aid Michigan citizens impacted by the financial crisis. The package includes:
- 400 “Recovery Grants” that provide 50 percent of tuition for eligible displaced workers or their dependent children through the completion of a degree program.
- Expanded academic programming in such fields as sustainability, alternative energy and life sciences that is geared to strengthen and diversify Michigan’s economy and prepare students for the changing global market.
- Career networking receptions and workshops – not limited to Lawrence Tech alumni and students – that match displaced workers with college degrees with innovative companies that have employment opportunities.
“The Recovery Starts Here package is an investment in the future of our state and nation, and the right thing to do. We believe this is the first comprehensive package of recovery initiatives set forth by any university in the nation,” Walker said. “The recovery starts here and it must start with us. We invite other institutions throughout Michigan to join us. Together, we will succeed.”
Component 1 – Recovery Grants for Tuition Assistance
The new Lawrence Tech Recovery Grants will fund half the tuition for 400 displaced workers (or the dependent children of displaced workers) who meet the admissions criteria for the programs they wish to enter. Candidates must submit with their admissions application a dated buyout letter, separation agreement or unemployment application to show they are displaced.
The number of grants will initially be limited to the first 200 undergraduate and first 200 graduate students who qualify. Grant recipients will be expected to proceed on a full-time schedule until they have completed their degree programs, taking a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester if undergraduates, and six credit hours if graduate students.
Component 2 – Expanded Educational Options
Lawrence Tech has aggressively recast its existing academic programs and inaugurated new content. Recent new programs include bachelor’s degrees in biomedical engineering, industrial operations engineering, molecular and cell biology, chemical biology, transportation design, and media communication, and certificates in energy engineering and aeronautical engineering. A new leadership training initiative is being integrated throughout the undergraduate curricula.
New master’s degree programs include mechatronic systems engineering, architectural engineering, construction engineering management, and the MBA International. Many of these programs and others are offered days, evenings, weekends, or online to provide the flexibility that today’s students need.
To introduce future students to opportunities in these emerging fields, Lawrence Tech has planned the following introductory sessions:
- Graduate Program Open House – Thursday, Dec. 4, 6-7:30 p.m., BuellManagementBuilding atrium.
- On-the-Spot Admissions appointments – Thursday, Dec. 11, and Tuesday, Jan. 6, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., TaubmanStudentServicesCenter.
- Information Fairs –Saturday, Dec. 13, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Thursday, Jan. 8, 5-7 p.m. at Lawrence Tech Education Centers at Schoolcraft College and Lansing Community College. A third fair will be held at Schoolcraft Saturday, Jan. 10, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Educational Fair – Thursday, Jan. 8, 2-7:30 p.m., BuellManagementBuilding atrium.
Component 3 – Recovery Starts Here career receptions and workshops
Lawrence Tech plans four career networking receptions for displaced workers with college degrees – not limited to Lawrence Tech students and alumni – beginning Jan. 22, 2009, from 5-9 p.m. on campus. Other receptions will follow on April 2, June 4 and Oct. 8.
“We at Lawrence Tech are convinced that all the building blocks required for an economic recovery are already here in Michigan. We aim to do our part to bring enterprising companies and educated workers together,” Walker said. “Combining the creativity of our entrepreneurs and the know-how of our workers will lead to Michigan’s next big economic success story.”
Additionally, Lawrence Tech’s Office of Career Services will offer free workshops designed to meet the professional development needs of displaced workers: “Resume Critiquing by Professionals,” “Networking for Success” and “Proven Job Search Strategies.”
Interested employers and job seekers can call (248) 204-4100 to register, or email recovery@ltu.edu.There are no fees to participate. For more information, visit ltu.edu/recovery.

With 2008 quickly drawing to a close, many Lawrence Tech Alumni and friends find themselves in the position of reviewing their year-end giving plans with the intention of supporting the institutions that are meaningful to them. A link for Click and Give is available at Lawrence Tech’s homepage, www.ltu.edu .
The first time you access the site, you will be asked to provide some personal information and set up a user name and password. From that point forward, you will be able to login to your online giving profile and review all the online gifts you have made after you established that profile. Also, through the new site, we now accept American Express along with Visa and MasterCard.

Gifts mailed to the University must be postmarked by December 31, 2008 to count as a 2008 contribution.
Gift Planning Web Site
Lawrence Tech is pleased to announce a new web site available to those who are interested in learning about ways to support the University through innovative gift vehicles. Also, if you are considering making a bequest to the University, you’ll find helpful information at this same site.
Gift vehicles such as gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts may provide opportunities to avoid, either partially or completely, capital gains tax on appreciated assets. They can also be utilized to take a low yield asset and turn it a vehicle that provides you with a higher rate of return. Imagine that…beating the IRS while at the same time making a gift to Lawrence Tech that actually pays you back!

Dear Lawrence Technological University Alums:
On behalf of the Master of Urban Design (MUD) Curriculum Development Committee of the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technological University, Southfield, Michigan, I am pleased to reach out to you to share exciting news about our new program, and to have your participation in our efforts.
We are in the process of conducting a market study for the proposed MUD program. We believe your input would be tremendously helpful toward creating a new program in Urban Design, building on the success of our current programs in architecture and urban design under the leadership of our current dean, Glen LeRoy, FAIA, FAICP.
Our new program, when established, will be among the most unique urban design programs in the United States in terms of its emphasis on sustainable urbanism and the collaboration between architecture and other disciplines such as Environmental Studies, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Geography, Economics, Law, Government, Management, Engineering, Sociology, Psychology, and others to educate students about promoting a holistic and sustainable approach to placemaking. By developing this unique integrative program, we hope to fill the gap that currently exists in the architecture and planning industries, especially in this difficult time of increasing concerns about sustainability—the environment, the economy and social conditions.
As a major part of our market study, we are conducting a web-based survey asking for your opinion on our proposed program. Please click on the following link to access our survey at https://www.ltu.edu/forms/index.asp?formid=1270 The deadline for completion of survey is December 31, 2008.
All we are asking is about 15 minutes of your time to complete the survey. We will use your responses to inform the structure and curriculum of the proposed MUD program. Your answers and contact information will be kept confidential. Your participation is strictly voluntary. You can skip any question. You are free to withdraw any time you wish.
Please feel free to contact me at j_kim@ltu.edu, if you have any questions about the survey or if you want to know more about the proposed MUD program. We value your input and sincerely hope that you will share your opinion with us.
Thank you for your time and assistance,
Sincerely,
Joongsub Kim, PhD, AIA, AICP
Associate Professor of Architecture
